Burnt Spur is a single vineyard estate located 8kms south
of the Martinborough township. While this is a relatively new
sub area the trophies, awards and accolades already received
confirm our beliefs about the quality of the site and of our
hardworking vineyard and winery team led by winemaker Paul
Mason.
The 32 hectare block produced its first significant crop in
2003 and from 2008 will be in full production. The estate is
planted in the 3 hot varietals of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and
Sauvignon Blanc.
The Estate enjoys a beautiful northwest aspect facing straight
up the valley with breathtaking vistas on those long sunny
Martinborough days. This gentle northwest slope also helps
us avoid the risks of frost damage, whilst giving the vines
enhanced sunlight exposure.
The soils can be classed as heavier than those found in the
original Martinborough Terrace region. The soil profile consists
of 20-25cm of silt loam followed by subsoils of mottled clay
and clay loam. These soils are consistent with the description
of Wharekaka Fine Mottled Sandy loam, which characterises the
rolling hills around Martinborough and are also similar in
composition to other high quality Pinot Noir producing vineyards
both in New Zealand and overseas. The initial soil tests lead
us to believe that the site could produce high quality grapes
and the first wines coming off the vineyard has confirmed this.
Our winemaking philosophy is simple: great wines are made
in the vineyard. To achieve this we intensively manage the
vineyard by hand. Low yields and an emphasis on balance ensure
we produce high quality, terroir expressive, ripe luscious
grapes.
We actively promote sustainability, using guidelines from
Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand, to limit the impact on
our environment and for the future of our industry in New Zealand.
An exiting future lays ahead.
Burnt Spur is part of the Martinborough Vineyard Estates family
